Regus gives £20m boost to young entrepreneurs

July 5th 2012 - Prime Minister David Cameron today welcomed the news that Regus, the world’s largest flexible workspace provider, is giving 30,000 young entrepreneurs in England access to its global network of business lounges and administrative support. Worth £20 million, this support from Regus will give a tangible boost to young entrepreneurs who are starting up a business.

The investment complements the Government’s £82.5 million StartUp Loans scheme which will provide mentoring support and around £2,500 to approved young people looking to set up a new business. The scheme is being chaired by James Caan of Dragon’s Den fame.

Regus will offer this group of entrepreneurs:

*6 months free and unlimited use of its Virtual Office (a network of business lounges in over 1,200 business centres worldwide, including over 160 in the UK);

*A business address in a recognised business location;

*Mail handling and call answering; and

*Discounts on all other Regus products and services.

Recognising the importance of enterprise and business activity in driving economic growth, Regus has pledged its support for StartUp Loans by providing this group of young entrepreneurs with high quality, professional and flexible support allowing them to focus on building their business.

David Cameron, Prime Minister said:

"Enterprise is vital to our country's future and I welcome the excellent news that Regus are getting behind our young entrepreneurs and helping them get their businesses and ideas off the ground. Regus' support for Startup Loans is a fantastic example of an established and successful company reaching out to help nurture the next generation of British businesses.

"As a Government, we also have buildings at our disposal and I am determined that, where we can, we make unused space available to aspiring entrepreneurs to build and grow their businesses. We recently announced that 20 empty Government buildings will become spaces available for start-up businesses and this work continues."

Steve Purdy, Regus UK MD said:

“When the StartUp Loans scheme was announced, it was immediately clear that this was an initiative that Regus should actively support. We believe businesses should be investing in the next generation of British entrepreneurs and the future of British business. Rather than moaning from the sidelines about what more the Government should do to stimulate growth, we believe it is time business offered some meaningful support - we hope others will follow suit.”

James Caan, StartUp Loans Company Chairman:

"I am delighted to welcome Regus as our first Global Partner - not least because they are a great example of how a small company can grow to become a world leader. This £20m commitment from Regus will provide these young entrepreneurs with first-rate facilities and support as they embark on their exciting new journey.”

“Regus' generous provision has demonstrated to me the fantastic will of the private sector to get behind Start Up Loans and I believe this is the start of many more companies coming on board to make similar offers helping young people with the tools they need to launch and grow their own businesses through Start Up Loans."

Business and Enterprise Minister Mark Prisk, said:

“We want to give young people the best possible chance to start and grow their own enterprise. StartUp Loans is not just providing a small amount of funding, but is about looking at the bigger picture and giving access to a full package of business training and mentoring. The offer by Regus to provide £20 million of further business support is an added boost to young people looking to get into business.”

About StartUp Loans

StartUp Loans are designed for 18-24 years olds who are interested in starting a business but are lacking access to the necessary finance or support to realise their ambitions.

£10 million is being made available for a pilot scheme in 2012/13, with a further £32.5 million in 2013/14 and £40 million in 2014/15 (subject to sufficient demand from young people and capability within the support network to engage and support them).

To administer the StartUp Loans, the Government is creating a new body to provide guidance and direction. James Caan has agreed to chair this new body and has already recruited a team to bring real expertise to the delivery of the scheme.

Those who apply will get access to personal support with the most viable progressing on to formal business planning and mentor support. Where the business plan is robust and approved, they will be able to access financial support in the form of loan. The loan will typically be in the order of £2,500 – directly comparable with existing lenders in this area such as the Prince’s Trust – the longest permissible lending period will be 5 years. The StartUp Loans will be available in England only.
