Comment on Olympic flexible working trials

Celia Donne, Regional Director at flexible workspace provider Regus comments, "Flexible working is an ideal solution – if not an imperative – for firms in London’s commuter belt to avoid getting caught up in potential transport problems during the Olympics.

“But managers must remember that flexible working is not just about home-working. Indeed our research has shown that 90% of workers do not want to work from home nor is it always practical for them to do so. For many people, the best option is a local ‘third place’ or co-working hub which allows them to avoid domestic distractions but - crucially - does not involve commuting.

“This could be one of the big lessons from companies' home-working trials in the run up to the Olympics. Third places include business centres where people can benefit from access to technology and facilities not available at home, and feel confident to meet customers, partners and co-workers in an appropriate setting.

“Although many employers may view the Olympic transport challenges as a temporary hindrance, it may well open their eyes to new ways of working – anywhere, anytime that best suits their staff – and that will be a highly positive outcome. Flexible working has a multitude of long-term benefits for staff and employers alike, not least healthier, happier and more motivated workers."
